| Hey all you “losers in love” out there, pay attention!
Vince Gill’s Let’s Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye
could have one of two effects. The optimists among you may be
stirred to continue hunting for that elusive perfect relationship.
For the pessimists among you, however, this feel-good album could
trigger a bad case of the blues.
Though Gill does seek solace and anguished relief in one number,
"Hey, God," his tribute to friend and fellow golfer
Payne Stewart, the rest of the CD is an outpouring of joy. All
of the numbers on the CD are written by Gill, six with co-writers
including Amy Grant, Steve Diamond, Michael Omartian and Leslie
Satcher.
The album was recorded in the months just prior to Gill’s
marriage to Grant and, not surprisingly, the songs reflect the
various faces and nuances of new-found love.
The first cut on the album, "One," is a slow, lushly-produced
“two hearts becoming one” ode reflecting amazement
and wonder. "Feels Like Love" continues the thread of
the previous number, injecting a sense of exhilaration with it’s
uptempo rambunctiousness. The title cut, "Let’s Make
Sure We Kiss Goodbye," along with "For the Last Time,"
emphasizes the fleeting nature of love and life and reaffirms
the need to constantly nurture both. "When I Look Into Your
Heart," a Gill and Grant duet, injects a near euphoric sense
of wonder into the album. "Baby Don’t Go" boogies
along, while "Little Things" captures the lazy, fuzzy
contentment to be had in sharing the minutiae of daily life. Gill
shares vocal harmonies with daughter Jenny on "That Friend
of Mine."
"Let’s Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye," Gill’s
10th album for MCA, finds him wearing his heart on his sleeve.
Always a master at capturing moments and setting moods, Gill,
has left himself absolutely nowhere to hide in this musical outpouring
of joy. I bet he wouldn’t have it any other way!
